VICTORIAN VILLA

REDLAND

The brief

Having recently moved into their Victorian property in Redland, our client was keen to inject some colour and personality. They wanted to create a cohesive flow throughout the house, and to enhance the wonderful period features they had inherited.

Design challenges

With lots of existing furniture that wasn’t working in the new rooms, and a real need for more cupboards and storage, it was important to spend time working out how the space could best be used. There was also a quirky mezzanine area that needed a purpose or it would quickly turn into wasted space.

Client style notes

An Inspire Session and shared Pinterest board helped us to uncover the client’s personal preferences when it came to style and colour. We found they were drawn to strong pops of colour, pinks, blues and yellows, as well as geometric and abstract patterns. Silks and velvets were particularly appealing. And there was plenty of talk about glamour and ‘wow’ factor. So lots of our favourite things to work with.

Bespoke Details

We love to add bespoke elements to our designs. It’s a great way to create something that our client is truly able to connect with. And when additional storage is needed, carefully designed cupboards and cabinets can really help make the most of the space available and show off favourite treasures in their best light.

In this design we included bespoke cabinetry, furniture and blinds and soft furnishings. These came together to create a unique décor that gave our client everything they asked for. We even commissioned a local craftsperson, Doghead Designs, to upcycle  an old drinks cabinet into a striking talking point, using beautiful marbling and gold leaf techniques.

Favourite Rooms in Focus

The Kitchen

In the kitchen, standout design elements were the Bluebell Gray mural we chose to help tie the mezzanine into the space below. The antique mirror gold tiles set against white worktops and cabinetry for that touch of glamour. And striking bespoke lighting pendants to lessen the effect of the high ceiling.

The Living Room

We chose a bold design for the living room, incorporating dark wooden panelling against the lovely wooden floor. Pops of colour – those blues, pinks and yellows – were brought in through bespoke blinds and soft furnishings and Kay’s bespoke furniture. While finishing touches included the upcycled drinks cabinet designed to perfectly tie into the scheme, and artwork curated to complement the feel and emotion of the new space.

"Kay is a very personable and positive person, who offers a professional and practised eye. When I first approached Kay, I had already commissioned a new kitchen and knew the look I wanted to achieve in our dining, mezzanine and living room areas, but Kay was excellent at giving me direction and helping me decide the mix of fabrics, colours and furnishings to choose and where to place furniture. She also gave me constructive and helpful feedback on the finer elements of the project, such as artwork and rugs. I am delighted with the results and especially that Kay was happy to support my bold colour choices, as well as pushing me to use a few colours I hadn't considered previously. The final palette is so uplifting and yet the rooms are sophisticated and stylish. It was a pleasure working with Kay and I would definitely recommend her."
