FARMHOUSE

CHELVEY

The brief

For this young family from Bristol, the move out to this Chelvey Farmhouse was an opportunity to upsize. But as is often the case with a house move, they found it tricky to work out how best to use the space in the new place. And were looking for inspiration to help incorporate existing furniture in the new scheme while keeping a cohesive look.

With the opportunity to stamp their own personality on this lovely farmhouse, the brief was very much that colour and pattern should feature prominently.

Design challenges

As a lovely traditional farmhouse, there were plenty of original features that deserved to be celebrated in a new contemporary interior design. But there were also a number of existing family heirlooms, items that had been collected over years of travel, that needed to also tie in.

On top of this, the family were aware they required help to really work out their own style preferences. Which luckily is something I love to do.

Client style notes

As part of the initial work, we went through a process of pinning ideas back and forth on Pinterest, and looking at numerous samples, exploring colours and textures. We took our time to really nail it down so I (and in fact, they) could get a good idea of their likes and dislikes. During the process we came up with a cohesive colour palette for the entire house.

Bespoke Details

It’s during projects like this, where we’re trying to marry the traditional with the contemporary, that using bespoke suppliers truly comes into its own. In this case allowing us to create timeless shapes and silhouettes while introducing more modern, vibrant colours.

To meet the brief we designed and made bespoke furniture in contemporary patterns. We commissioned bespoke curtains and blinds to be made in beautiful linens and Nina Campbell prints. And we incorporated William Morris wallpaper as a nod to tradition, choosing a bright mustard yellow for a contemporary feel.

The Office

As part of the redesign in the home office we commissioned bespoke fitted cabinetry, opting for a deep marine blue to keep the contemporary vibe.

As a nod to the traditional farmhouse feel, rather than choosing carpets or flooring, we brought beauty back to the original floors by commissioning an expert to repair, sand and oil them. This added a gorgeous, rich finish to the room.

The Dining / Kitchen with Snug

With this part of the house it was very much about trying to connect three spaces together to create a natural flow. We kept warmth in the snug by using a deep coral, adding light blue linen voiles to add privacy and sunlight protection. We then kept the kitchen and dining areas lighter.

To add texture and pattern we bespoke made 2 armchairs in different Linwood print fabrics from the small prints collection, designing them with wide armrests and deep seats to sink into. These very much complement the farmhouse style but offer a contemporary twist. The bespoke coffee table-cum-footstool was designed and upholstered in contrasting hand-printed Rapture & Wright fabric.

"My experience with Kay has been seamless and the transformation of my home has been wonderful to watch. Kay’s passion for colour, design and fully understanding how and what will work for us has been exceptional. Plus, with the added service of bespoke furniture, it gave the perfect finishing touch to our project design. So much so, that we are now on our 4th room design. I would highly recommend Kay to anyone who needs some guidance and support with bringing their home to life."
