COACH HOUSE

CLEVEDON

The brief

It is often the case when we downsize, furniture that previously fitted so well into our home, no longer feels right or has its perfect place. And these clients were no exception. Having moved from a family home in a different area to this quaint coach house in Clevedon, their furniture just didn’t fit in terms of style or scale. They needed help to discover their interior style and how it could work to make the most of their new home.

Key elements of the brief were to design a new kitchen / dining area with seating and plenty of entertaining space. There was also a request for somewhere to display family heirlooms.

Design challenges

Moving out of the family home into a smaller property and being faced with difficult decisions can be extremely emotional. We’re experienced in working with clients who are going through this transition, supporting them to think things through practically, while not detracting from the importance of the choices that need to be made.

Particular challenges our client asked for help with, were lighting up the darker areas of the property, finding more storage space and trying to stop the dining room from “feeling like a corridor.”

Client style notes

The inspire sessions with this couple were particularly useful, helping them to discuss the new space and how they saw it working for them. As well as really concentrating on uncovering their sense of style and how it could work in this setting. Talking everything through also helped them to work out which of their existing items it was most important to keep, and thus needed to be incorporated into the design.

One example here was the baby grand piano. We supported them with the difficult decision to put it into storage for the time being, designing the upright into the space instead.

Bespoke Details

In order to make the most of the space available in this beautiful coach house, and to achieve maximum benefit from the view onto the traditional courtyard, we took a highly bespoke approach to furnishing.

The design included upholstered balconet seating with a shelving display area and built-in seating to help open up the dining area. This created more space making the room perfect for entertaining. We also commissioned a bespoke refectory table from Konk Bristol, in a beautiful rich walnut. Finally we upholstered the seating in printed velvet from Mc Bean and Budd for a luxurious look and created a relaxing area looking out to the garden, with a conveniently located drinks cabinet.

Favourite Rooms in Focus

New Kitchen

We tackled the challenges of a smaller kitchen by increasing the storage and incorporating a number of design features to help the room appear lighter.

This included a variety of additional lights and reeded glass cupboards. As well as antique mirrored tiles and brush gold fixtures to help reflect the light around the space. We also chose a classic Wedgewood blue to ensure the cabinetry was neither stark nor dark.

TV Snug Room

The redesign of the snug room included comfortable seating to relax in and watch TV ,while also making the best of the room’s garden view. It was important to not only keep the room’s original features, but also to seamlessly incorporate existing heirlooms. We continued the colour scheme of dusky pinks and teals, antique golds, warm woods and traditional stone into this room, but deepened the colour palette a little to create a cosy feel.

Particularly successful design elements here include a rich metallic teal wallpaper, a deep teal sofa for extra seating and the reupholstering of existing chairs in dusky pink. To finish the look and keep the space cosy we added a pale pink silk rug and bespoke botanical curtains to frame the garden view.

"Kay enabled us to see the potential of our home with her inspirational ideas and advice. Having relocated and down-sized to a very different style of house we needed help with curating, styling and organising our existing furnishings as well as designing schemes to suit our new home. Kay had a great eye, both for style and colour and was able to help us to see the wood for the trees! She sensitively

suggested new schemes and ideas whilst listening to our requirements for retaining treasured possessions and making the new space work for our lifestyle.I would highly recommend Kay. She is a delight to work with being creative, efficient and encouraging and she is generous with her ideas and time. Thank you Kay"
