Hello Home Lover,

As spring turns to summer, I start to think of the garden not just as a backdrop, but as somewhere to really spend time - to sit, eat, lie back and enjoy.

We’ve just finished building our terrace, and I’ve loved pulling the space together. Plus, a recent trip to Morocco, with its colourful, outdoor gathering places, gave me a fresh wave of inspiration.

So, this month, I’m sharing thoughts on how to create your own outside paradise - practical, beautiful, and tailored to however you want to use it.

Your garden, your way

I’m sorry to say it, but practicality has to come first. What do you want from your space?

Do you want a place to eat, to sunbathe, to have coffee with a friend, or to cook outside? Or do you want a combination of all of those things?

What’s the light like in the morning? Will you want to stay outside in the evening? How much shade is naturally available and will you need to create more?

Once you know how you want to live in your space, everything else flows from that.

Seating, planting, side tables, cushions, lighting, even small fire pits for chilly evenings.

It doesn’t need to be perfect. Nature itself isn’t perfect.

It just needs to be somewhere you feel drawn to - even a little excited - to spend time.

Outdoor Style Finds

Lightweight aluminium furniture

I love Lazy Susan and Hartman for long-lasting cast aluminium frames that won’t tarnish with the weather. Dress them up with stylish cushions, throws and blankets .

Wireless outdoor table lamps

Relatively new for residential homes. These rechargeable mini table lamps are perfect for flexible mood lighting without the unsightly cables. And look at these gorgeous colours.

Patterned outdoor rugs

A bold, patterned rug helps create an instant room-like atmosphere as well as a base for layering. Try Designer's Guild or Sophie Robinson at Dunelm for some great options.

Mixed material side tables

Stylish side tables are a great way to add a different material or style into the mix. And these ceramic side tables from Anthropologie are simply perfect.

Statement shade options

From canopies to pretty parasols, shade options vary depending on what you need. But if you’re in the market for a stylish sun umbrella I recommend East London Parasol Company .

Creating a designer outdoor space

If you’re not sure where to begin, let your house guide you.

A period home? Classic furniture with cute unexpected details.

New build? Sleek, modern and minimalist with bold pops of colour.

You can blend styles if you like - but a little continuity is important too.

Garden furniture takes a beating from the elements, so think carefully about materials. Then soften everything with textiles by adding cushions, rugs and throws.

Mix patterns (florals, stripes, geometrics), play with scale and bring in colour. Outdoors is the perfect place to be just that little bit braver than you might be inside.

And finally, don’t shy away from a little 'room' dressing. Add lighting, side tables, plants, even outdoor art or a mural. The most successful outdoor spaces are the ones that feel just as considered as the rooms indoors.

Only with a better view.

How to create a designer outdoor space that feels like an extra room

HOW TO CREATE a designer outdoor space...

...AND gain an extra room

If you're anything like me, as soon as the weather turns, you feel the pull to spend more time outdoors.

Morning coffee, weekend breakfasts, reading in the sun, coffee with friends - the garden or terrace becomes an extension of your home. But to really enjoy that space, you need to put a little thought into how you set it up.

A designer outdoor space is not about perfection. It’s about comfort, practicality, and small details that make life outside feel effortless and enjoyable.

Start with how you live

Begin by thinking about what you actually want to do in your outdoor space.

Do you want a proper table and chairs to eat breakfast in the sun? Somewhere to sit with friends and enjoy a cuppa and a chat? A lounger to stretch out on with a book? Or a space to gather on a balmy evening for dinner and drinks?

These simple questions will help you decide how to best set up your space.

Think about the rhythm of your day: where does the sun land in the morning? Which areas get too hot in the afternoon? And will you want to sit out into the evening? And then work from there.

When it comes to materials,

think practicality first

Outdoor furniture goes through a lot - especially if you live somewhere exposed to sun, rain, or sea air (like Clevedon!). For that reason, aluminium has become a favourite of mine.

It’s lightweight, doesn’t rust, and lasts years longer than cheaper alternatives. Yes, it might be a bit more of an investment, but it really is worth it in the long run.

Look for well-made frames, and then you can swap out or refresh cushions when necessary, without breaking the bank for a whole new furniture set.

Lazy Susan and Hartman both make great aluminium options that blend practicality with style. I promise you they’ll last the distance.

Let your home guide the look...

Your house and garden should speak to one another. If they don’t you’ll end up with a disconnect.

If you live in a period home, for example, you might choose classic shapes and then add a contemporary edge. While a modern build might suit a more minimalist scheme.

Of course, you can always push the boundaries a little, but it helps to have a thread of continuity between indoors and out.

...but don’t be afraid to be bolder with outdoor colour

One of the joys of decorating outside is that the green backdrop of the garden gives you freedom with colour. It sets off bolds and brights beautifully, so if you’re someone who leans more neutral indoors, this could be the space to experiment.

Stripes, pinks and purples, Amalfi-inspired yellows, whites and ruffles - anything goes if it makes you feel good.

This can be your place to let go and enjoy yourself.

Dress it like a room

To really make the most of your outdoor space, treat it like any other room in the house.

Rugs, cushions, throws, and side tables all add warmth and comfort. And there are plenty of gorgeous outdoor options around this season. From patterned textiles to decorative lanterns and murals.

I recently came back from Morocco where the outdoor spaces were fully dressed with sofas, rugs and even fixed lighting and painted walls. The finished effect really was inspiring.

Don’t forget, nature and plants should play a part too. Whether it’s a view of rolling countryside or just well-placed pots and greenery, make sure you’ve got something lovely to look at from your seat. That alone can completely change how a space feels.

Incorporate some fun little details

It’s worth thinking about the smaller comforts too - soft cushions that make seats more inviting, cute little side tables for a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and lighting for the evening.

From solar path lights to newer wireless table lamps, there are lots of lovely ways to keep the atmosphere going once the sun sets. Plus, if you plan to be out there on cooler evenings, small stoves or portable fire pits make a real difference.

And don’t forget to consider shade - look for standalone parasols and other flexible options that you can move easily as the sun moves.

Play with pattern and texture

The ideas from our last newsletter on small-scale prints work just as well outside.

In fact, the garden is a brilliant place to be more playful with pattern.

You can mix florals with stripes, geometrics with ditsy prints, large-scale with small. Outdoor rugs often come in bold patterns that make the perfect base, and there’s a huge range of outdoor cushions to explore.

And don’t forget texture. Garden furniture is often quite hard by nature, so adding softness with textiles helps, but it’s also worth mixing in other materials - ceramic side tables, woven rattan, wood, and even metal accents. It stops everything feeling too flat or uniform and adds richness and personality.

The main thing? Don’t overthink it

Nature isn’t perfect. So your designer outdoor space doesn’t need to be polished or pristine.

Start with what you love, think about how you live, and let the rest evolve.

And if you can make it comfortable enough to want to sit out there all day – then you’ll know you’ve got it right.

If you’re looking to add a little more personality into your home, playing with small patterns is a brilliant way to start. You can add a little or a lot, depending on your preference.

You'll know, i f you read last month’s edition, that there are plenty of new collections out there to chose from. And the good news is these small prints feel much more modern and 'grown-up' than the hey day of Liberty's dizzying patterns.

So to help you get started, I’m sharing some simple ways to mix prints without it feeling overwhelming.

I want you to see that small patterns are not as scary as you think.

Small-scale patterns - stylish or scary?

Small patterns can bring so much life and warmth to a space but if you’re a design novice it can be difficult to know where to start.

The secret? Mix different pattern sizes, stick to a clear colour palette, and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Whether it’s ditsy florals, fine stripes, or neat geometrics, small prints can layer beautifully into your home without feeling fussy.

And without feeling “too much”.

Embracing small scale patterns and prints in your home

Stress-free pattern mixing for

your interior designs

Introducing pattern into your home can feel a little daunting. Especially if the patterns that catch your eye are fairly small – like some of those I highlighted from London Design Week last month.

Get it wrong and things can feel busy or overwhelming. But get it right and you’ll create rich, layered interiors full of life and personality.

The good news is, there are a few simple principles that can help you mix patterns with confidence - whether you’re layering them up or simply adding a few pieces for interest.

And of course, once you know the rules, it can be lots of fun to try breaking them once in a while. Don’t you think?

1. Start with a statement pattern

Before you dive into mixing lots of small patterns, it’s important to anchor your scheme with a show-stopping larger pattern.

This might be a dramatic floral fabric, a bold geometric wallpaper, or even a striking rug. Pick something you absolutely love and this will set the tone for everything else.

Once you have your statement piece chosen, you can start to build the rest of your scheme around it, using small patterns to complement and enhance the overall look.

2. Choose a colour palette and stick to it

One of the biggest mistakes people make when mixing patterns is losing control of the colour story.

I always advise choosing your key fabric or wallpaper first and taking your colour palette from that. Ideally, you’ll have at least three colours to work with, but five is even better, giving you more flexibility to create a cohesive, layered look.

And don’t forget. As you move forward with your design, keep referring back to your colour palette as you go. It'll make sure everything connects together, even when you’re mixing very different patterns and styles.

3. Mix pattern size and scale to create balance

The key to making different patterns work together is all about scale. Small patterns really come into their own when they are balanced against medium and large patterns. Without that contrast, a room can easily feel too hectic or too flat.

Try one of these ideas:

Pair a large-scale floral with a small geometric
Mix bold prints with tiny, ditsy patterns.
Use a busy small-scale wallpaper, but keep the furniture pieces in plainer fabrics, adding bold patterned cushions for extra detail.

If you’re feeling a little braver, you can even flip the scale — for example, using a large-scale patterned wall with a small-scale patterned sofa.

It might sound bold, but when tied together with a consistent colour palette, really can look absolutely stunning.

4. Add definition with trims and details

When working with small patterns, little details can make all the difference.

Think, busy patterned cushions with a bold plain edging, almost creating a frame for the eye. Or what about the reverse? A plain cushion with a patterned trim for a pop of interest.

Patterned headboards, especially in bedrooms, can look beautiful edged with a plain piping or border, giving a crisp, finished look.

This is something I’m seeing everywhere at the moment. And these seemingly tiny elements can elevate a design, helping to create definition and stop patterns from bleeding into each other.

5. Do you have a pattern personality?

This is one thing I explore with new clients during there one-to-one Inspire Session. And actually it’s really valuable to understand where you fall when it comes to patterns.

The question is:

Are you a “many layers” person, or a “one big feature” person?

Some people love intricate interiors full of details, trims, and different patterns coming together – in the design world we call this maximalism. Others prefer clean, bold statements – perhaps one standout patterned piece in a sea of elegant plains.

Neither approach is right or wrong - it’s about what makes you feel good in your home. In fact, the most successful interior schemes are the ones that reflect your personality, not what’s trending.

6. Remember: there are no rules

Finally - and perhaps most importantly - remember there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to your home.

People I meet are so often scared of ‘getting it wrong’ or creating a room that looks ‘too crazy’. But if you consistently stick to your colour palette and mix up patterns of different scales, you’ll be amazed how fabulous the final result can look.

To be honest, the best advice I can give is to enjoy the process.

Decorating should be fun and joyful, not stressful. Trust your instincts, pick up tonnes of samples, move things around, pair them together, look at them in different lights, until they feel right.

And don’t worry about what others might think. Your home should make you happy – you’re not designing it for anyone else.

So embrace the small prints, have fun experimenting, and remember: the only real rule is that you love living in the space you’ve created.

Spring is one of my favourite times of year.

I think it’s the fresh flowers and the light flooding the windows.

Plus, it’s time for one of my favourite events of the year - The London Design Show.

As ever, I walked tens of thousands of steps and took far too many photos. But that just means lots of ideas and inspiration to share with you here.

Have you heard of London Design week?

London Design Week takes place each March at Chelsea Harbour.

It’s a chance for hundreds of interior brands to come together and show off their new collections to a hungry bunch of designers.

Personally, I love to wander around, soak up the atmosphere and get an idea of which direction styles and trends are moving.

This year there was a lovely mix of long established brands and new entrants, with a real variety of ideas and a strong spring vibe.

Old favourites like Osborne & Little and David Hunt Lighting sat alongside the nature-inspired Bertioli by Thyme collection and this tactile furniture display by Fiona McDonald.

Which spring styles did I spot?

What I found so interesting this year, was that there wasn't one overwhelming direction on show for 2025.

Instead I'd say there were two distinct vibes.

Of course there were exceptions, but lots of the exhibitors this year were bringing their designs to life with a core element of either layered small patterns or strong tribal prints - often with a modern twist.

Layering busy prints

Small prints are definitely continuing to have a moment with new collections full of busy prints and plenty of colourways.

Think homely cottagey vibes with a modern edge - eye-catching and easy to live with. Quite a departure from the maximalist colour blocking that's been so popular.

Tribal vibes

You might remember I spotted hints of this aboriginal aesthetic at the Decorex and Focus 24 shows during my visit in Autumn of last year.

But now we're seeing this start to gain traction.

I especially enjoyed watching talented artist Geoffroy Pithon creating this stunning mural for Casamance .

Delightful details from Design Week

Trims, tufts & tassles

We'll be seeing all sorts of adornments on curtains and furniture alike.

Striking statement rugs

Stepping away from plain colours - these rugs are perfect as the start point for a design .

Rustic colour palettes

Colours inspired by the earth, with splashes of blue for a lovely fresh feeling.

Electrifying lighting

Statement lamps and overheads taking inspiration from current trends.

Fluid forms in furniture

It’s so lovely to see soft curves making their cosy comeback.

Designer's Guild - a blast of spring colour

After the Design Show, I headed to the launch of Designer’s Guild's Spring Summer 2025 collection.

It was a breath of fresh air.

Thanks to the pops of fresh spring colours and mix of stunning stripes and florals, walking into these rooms felt instantly uplifting.

And it really got my brain buzzing with ideas for upcoming projects.

Overcoming your window treatment woes

Hello Home Lover,

Maybe it's just because when the days are shorter the curtains are closed for longer, but I’ve been thinking lately about the importance of the way we dress our windows.

Whether we choose bold printed curtains or colour block blinds can instantly change the look and feel of a room. That’s why, in this month’s newsletter, we’re delving into the world of window treatments.

What are the options? What are the pros and cons? And how can you make the right choice for your home?

Confused about how to style your windows?

It's not overstating it to say that getting your window treatments right can completely transform your space.

Curtains, blinds, or shades can add warmth, create the perfect mood, and even impact the proportions of a room - both positively and negatively.

Which is why it's perhaps both a blessing and a curse that the options are endless .

Floor-to-ceiling curtains, for example, can make your room feel more spacious, while blinds can make a smaller space feel more open and airy.

They also control how natural light flows into a room, giving you the ability to create a soft, inviting ambiance, or block out light for privacy and comfort.

But how can you be sure to make the right choice for your window?

Ask: What do I need from my window dressings?

When you're working out window treatment designs, you'll almost certainly get the best result if you think about the practical aspects first:

How do you use the room?
When do you use the room?
Which direction do the windows face?
Does the room feel too cold? Or too warm?
How much space do you have to play with?
How accessible is the window?

You might decide your priority is to keep the draft out, to shade your workspace from the midday sun or to keep the room nice and dark so the baby can nap.

Once you know what you need, you can work out how best to achieve it.

My room is small.

For smaller rooms , space-saving options like shutters or Roman blinds work well without compromising on style.

I can't reach my windows.

Skylights or dormers? Electric blinds offer the perfect balance of practicality and ease.

It's always drafty in the evenings.

Choose full length curtains that will stop that cold air in its tracks, and select a thicker fabric or a design that contains extra wadding.

What's best in a bathroom?

In damp spaces like kitchens or bathrooms, don't forget to look at waterproof options to reduce the risk of mould.

I'm worried a print will be overwhelming.

If you're nervous about using block colours, or too much ‘pattern’, consider adding just a little interest with a trim or decorative header on your curtains or blinds.

How can I get some privacy?

If you need privacy in street-level rooms or terraced houses, sheer fabrics, frosted glass or pull up blinds, provide a stylish yet functional solutions for different tastes and budgets.

I need total darkness to sleep well

Choose curtains that contain a blackout lining, or install a blackout blind that will make sure you sleep like a baby.

I don't want my blind to fade like the last one

Sunny south-facing window? Look for a blind that's made from UV-protected fabric to make sure it'll retain it's bright colours.

I need different things at different times of day

If versatility is important to you, try installing double tracks for curtains and sheers. That'll give you the flexibility to control light, warmth and ambience as and when you want to.

Top tip: Don’t forget to think about how your curtains will look both open and closed - it's all about getting the full impact!

...window treatments & when to choose them

Add floor length curtains for a dash of drama

I always recommend choosing full length when you’re including drapes in an interior design. I just feel they bring a tailored, high-end look to any space.

They draw the eye upwards to create the illusion of higher ceilings, as well enhancing smaller windows and making them feel more in proportion. Plus they'll keep the light out and offer better insulation.

Make a statement with Roman blinds

Roman blinds look beautiful, don’t they?

They’re sleek, tailored and can be designed to blend into their surroundings or create impact depending on the fabric you choose.

But they’re not just aesthetically pleasing, they’re also incredibly practical – for light control, privacy and insulation. Plus, they can work equally well in both large and small spaces without over-cluttering the look.

Make a statement with Roman blinds

Roman blinds look beautiful, don’t they?

They’re sleek, tailored and can be designed to blend into their surroundings or create impact depending on the fabric you choose.

Embrace timeless elegance with a wave pleat

Wave pleats can look absolutely stunning when you’re designing drapes into a minimalist space. They're clean, streamlined and so elegant. Yet more relaxed than the traditional pleat curtain.

Definitely something to consider if you’re after a modern, contemporary look. I also love how they stack back so beautifully when not drawn.

Select frosted film for a simple uncluttered look

If you need privacy – perhaps in a street level room, or a bathroom, frosted film can be a great solution. It provides an etched glass effect, that can be applied and removed easily.

These days, you’ll find various patterns, some of which are really beautiful. And rather than sacrificing natural light, frosted film will softly diffuse it through your space.

What if I'm looking for perfection?

Of course, perfection is possible.

But off-the-shelf options will almost certainly end in compromise.

When tailored for you, curtain and blind designs can be adjusted specifically for your window's size, aspect, and use.

Yes, it still feels pretty cold and wintery outside, but my inbox is certainly hotting up for spring. With lots of gorgeous new interiors lines appearing.

Plus, I’ve spotted several interesting new collaborations between high street retailers and designers from the world of interiors and beyond.

Curious about collaborations ?

High street x designer collabs are a great way to access a designer interior at a high street price.

It’s hard to explain why these designer pieces are so much more exciting than those you’d normally find on the high street. But, as you’ll see, there’s just something extra about the design and colour combinations.

Plus, the concepts and the patterns – in some cases – are just a bit braver than you might expect. They have quirky little moments that catch your attention.

They’ve been curated with a confidence that only a designer eye holds.

And they will carry that confidence into your space.

I just love that these collabs allow designer names to become more visible and accessible.

And as a bonus – they often include plenty of mix and match accessories and elements making it easier (and less stressful) to combine different colours, prints and styles successfully in your home.

The difference is in the design

Some of my favourite interior design collabs are born from a retailer working with a designer from outside the world of interiors.

A note about fast fashion

We can sometimes associate large retail chains with the idea of fast fashion and over consumption.

And this is something I struggle with.

While I love that these collaborations make designer items more accessible, I worry a little about the sustainability aspects.

But my beliefs remain the same.

Whether buying a one off bespoke item or a designer piece from a high street collection, it’s important to be mindful of what we bring into our homes.

I strive to only buy things I truly love and plan to keep for a long time. And I try to encourage my clients to do the same.

What did we see in 2024?

I’m confident the era of beiges and greys is over. And I couldn’t be happier about it.

As a colour-loving interior designer, I’m delighted to say that 2024 has given us glimpses of an exciting future. We’ve seen a move towards more colour and pattern than in previous years, on walls, fabrics, floor coverings and even ceilings.

It also brought an unexpected resurgence of red in design. Perfect for a fiery pop of eye-catching colour.

And for instant impact? Bookcase adornment. Whether you leave spaces to display ornaments and favourite pieces, or simply vary your book arrangements, creating interest through colour, stacks and themes.

My interior predictions for 2025

If you’re a regular reader you may remember that in the autumn I spent time at Decorex and Focus24 – showcasing design trends for the upcoming season. And I spotted several exciting themes emerging.

I expect the attraction of bold fabrics and finishes to continue. With colour drenching gaining popularity and lavenders and purples appearing in ever richer colour schemes.

Designs are becoming more and more complex, with textural layers, statement fabrics and stunning wallpapers. Plaster finishes, lime washes, modern panelling styles and checkered flooring, all building to create maximalist schemes full of exciting, and even surprising, juxtapositions.

When it comes to furniture, 2025 will be about curves and natural materials. Beautiful wood kitchens and greenery throughout our spaces. Creating peace and harmony in our homes.

Tips to avoid trends (for the sake of trends)

Discover your own colour palette

All good things start with colour. Which is why identifying your colour palette is so important to decorating for harmony in your home. Just because you’re told Mocha Mousse is the ‘Colour for 2025’, doesn’t mean you have to use it. When you’re planning a project, think about which colours you are most drawn to. And remember, you can use these in varying tones and shades.

Looking for inspiration? Pinterest is a great place to see an infinite number of colour palette examples. But don’t get too carried away. 5 or 6 colours is optimal when you’re planning a home redesign.

Find the sweet spot between architecture & interior style

Identifying the architecture of your home could also help you find an interior style that feels right for you. A new build apartment for example, might lend itself to an industrial or minimalist design. While a period property with original features could be showcased using maximalist or eclectic decor.

There are so many interior styles to choose from - I'll talk about these in detail another time. Meanwhile a quick internet search will give you some ideas. And don't forget it's important you not only pick a style that suits your home, but one that you'd love to be surrounded by as well.

Follow your heart

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Be led by what you love. What’s the point of having a house that’s ‘on trend’ if you don’t love it every time you walk through the door? Don’t be afraid to choose your favourite colours and patterns.

And if you really love a fabric or wallpaper, be brave. Use it as the basis for your room design. If you love that particular colour or pattern, the chances are you’ll love the finished result.

Think of trends as ‘tasters’

I’m not saying ‘never’ when it comes to trends. But more, ‘less is more’. The thing with trends is they change. Styles and colours go in and out of fashion. So, often, the best way to incorporate them is by taking a less permanent approach.

Use trends in small areas and on items than can easily be replaced. Think cushions and ornaments, or perhaps just one wall that won’t cost the earth to re-do at a later date.

Make sure your vision is clear before you start

When you’re designing a room, it’s important to visualise the bigger picture and see how your ideas will come together. Particularly if you’re thinking you’d like to include something bold or a bit different. That’s when a mood board comes into its own. You don’t need any fancy software, just a Pinterest board, or even a pile of glossy magazines and a pair of scissors.

Not only will you be able to really check your vision is cohesive, your finished mood board will be a useful tool for communicating with decorators and tradespeople.

Once you have your colour palette, your architecture style and your individual interior style, this will go a long way to helping you create something that not only looks great but also feels like the home you were always meant to have.

Another stat for you! A house that has been designed by an interior expert can achieve an uplift of up to 7% on its sale price. Simply because people will be able to better imagine themselves living in the space without having to do any work on it themselves. But of course, that doesn’t mean you should only consider hiring an interior designer if you’re about to move.

Hi, I'm Kay, the K in K Interiors!

I wanted to (re)introduce myself, but rather than reeling off my CV I thought, just for fun, I'd give you 10 random facts about me:

1. I’ve visited 15 different countries but London is still one of my favourite cities in the world.

2. My preferred brew is Rooibos tea . With or without milk and preferably with a biscuit.

3. I decorated my first room aged 8 , choosing a wallpaper called ‘Dolly Mixture.’ And I loved it!

4. I have lived in 15 different houses (that’s a LOT of interiors to design!)

5. My claim to fame is that I was on TV a few years ago, working on DIY SOS with Sophie Robinson.

6. The last book I read? Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. It’s all about love, loss and sisters, I can definitely recommend.

7. I lived in Tokyo for a year and now Sashimi is one of my favourite foods. Although my Japanese is still fairly illegible.

8. In the spirit of Sara Cox’s ‘Half Wower’. The first gig I ever went to was Del La Soul in Manchester in 1988. The last one , Massive Attack in Bristol earlier this year.

9. My guilty TV pleasure is Gavin & Stacey - I just loved this year's Christmas finale. I also love a bit of Sex & the City/ And Just Like That, as the fashion is off the charts!

10. What do I love most about my job?

When I see my clients have a light bulb moment , when everything suddenly clicks into place and they identify with their true colours, styles and pattern preferences - it’s a beautiful thing.

Colour consultations are a key part of what I offer as an interior designer – and while I mention it often, I don’t think I really talk about how absolutely life-changing it can be. When you truly understand the colours, prints, patterns and even textures that speak to you, far from being overwhelmed by all the choices available, you’ll just know when something feels right.

And that’s when you’ll find the courage to step outside of your comfort zone and make the brave choices that lead to the most beautiful interiors you can imagine.

6 Reasons to hire an interior designer

6 reasons why hiring an interior designer will be the best decision you make

So you’re ready to create the home of your dreams? A fusion of your favourite colours and styles, and a carefully curated showcase for favourite items and treasured memories you’ve collected throughout the years.

You’re imagining a haven, a place you come home to and instantly feel lighter. A space that feels truly you. Somewhere you can’t wait to share with friends and entertain’!

But where to start? Is this something you can achieve on your own?

If you’re in two minds about whether you’d benefit from working with an interior designer, here are just a few of the reasons you should consider making the investment:

1, You’re nervous it might not turn out quite the way you hope

Often, I find that it’s not that my clients are unable to see what works and what doesn’t when it comes to interiors, it’s that they’re too scared to go for it. They don’t have the confidence to make those ‘brave’ decisions. Opting instead to play it safe by painting the walls white, choosing one accent colour and selecting a few coordinated accessories from a high street shop.

Of course, that’s fine. But working with an interior designer would allow you to create a room that’s so much more.

If you yearn for a home that truly expresses your personality, filled with colours, patterns and prints you love - but never would have imagined you would love - an expert guiding hand is what you need. Along with a friendly hand to hold as you step outside your comfort zone.

Obviously home renovation is one of those things that everyone is capable of doing themselves. Just like everyone could sew all their own clothes, service their own cars, or cut their own hair. Most of us choose not to however, because we just know that someone who has had years of practise and experience will be able to do it better and far more efficiently.

And the same is true for interior design.

By investing in an interior designer to look after your project, you’ll guarantee the finished result will exceed expectations. With little pockets of perfection that you’ll keep noticing as the seasonal light changes, or as you move through rooms in different ways. Because, as interior designers, we’re trained to think about our designs from different perspectives, adding delightful depth and surprising layers that truly bring the finished result to life.

Interior design mistakes can be expensive. Whether it’s choosing the wrong paint colour and slapping it on the wall before you realise, or picking out an expensive sofa that just doesn’t work with the rest of the room. I often find one mistake can lead to another as you try to put things right – and ultimately can end in a room that cost a fortune and just isn’t what you set out to achieve.

And that’s without even considering the amount of time and effort you’ve spent on getting to that point.

When you hire an interior designer, you’ll be far less likely to make such costly errors. Not only will you have an expert on hand who knows what will work and what won’t, you’ll have someone to bounce your ideas off to make sure they’re in keeping with the finished result you’re looking for.

Sometimes the best way to stress less is to simply hand the problem over to someone else.

5, You need something that stands up to real life

A classic mistake that DIY home renovators make, is to get carried away in the ‘beauty’ of what they’re trying to create, rather than considering the fact it needs to be lived in. That’s why one of the first steps in my process is to spend time with you in your home and understand how you live. And the things you do and don’t like about your current living arrangements. We might discuss storage, or the need for flooring that can hold its own against 3 football-mad boys and a dog. Or you might have the need for a practical office space hidden in the corner of a dining room.

Whatever we do with the room, however stunning it looks, it’s no good if you can’t live in it, or with it, the way you need to. And an interior designer who’s seen it all before will be the best placed person to solve any practical problems and create design solutions making sure your room is a functional, as well as a beautiful, space.

6, You’re feeling overwhelmed with all the options available

Sometimes, it’s the getting started that can seem impossible. Trawling through Pinterest, flicking through magazines and visiting endless home stores can all feel a little stressful.

One sure way to overcome this overwhelm is to work closely with an interior designer to help uncover your interior likes and dislikes. And then narrow the field of options for you, offering only samples that will work for your home and the style you’re after.

Chic seasonal style or eclectic Christmas?

What do you imagine an interior designer’s Christmas tree looks like?

Elegant perhaps? Silvers and whites? A few stylish pops of colour for interest? Big bows and paper balls?

Apparently very ‘on trend’ for Christmas 2024.

When it comes to Christmas I believe decorations should be an extension of your personal style and of your personality.

If you’ve had an Inspire Session with me, you’ll understand your style, but even if you haven’t, look around you and see what you’re drawn to. When you go into friends’ homes or even shops or restaurants this Christmas, what do you love?

Perhaps you prefer a minimalist approach with neutrals, a modern take on the traditional red, greens and golds. Or all-out maximalism with bold pops of colour. And why not? Even if you wouldn’t be brave enough to embrace that style throughout your home, maybe Christmas is your time. Just those few precious weeks every year.

So, what do I have on my Christmas tree? Well I have a very eclectic mix of baubles from places I’ve visited across the world, as well as plenty of hilarious homemade decorations from when my now-very-much-grown-up son, Coel, was little.

I like to look back on the holidays we’ve taken together and reminisce about trips to see the lights in London. Visiting my favourite Christmas grotto at Liberty to choose one or two new decorations for the tree.

For me, the tree is all about the memories and colour.

But when it comes to your Christmas decorations, this is your permission to decorate totally for yourself, in whatever way speaks to you. And not for anyone else.

A Xm as 2024 trend to try out?

I’m not usually one for “trends” when it comes to interior design. But when I read about the idea of putting paper balls on the Christmas tree this year, I thought it sounded like fun.

Turns out to be a bit of a revelation, They’re super light, meaning you can hang them or place them on the branches - whatever works for you. They’re cheap, impactful and great for filling in any gaps.

Even better you can buy a mixed pack of different sizes, shapes and colours direct from Amazon - so there’s still time!

In Henry Holland’s words, their “‘big boy' chalice bowl demands the attention it deserves and works on the table or just chilling on the shelf pleased with his own self-importance”. I love that description. Handmade using a slab-building technique, you can choose from 5 different colourways. I think I’d struggle to choose my favourite.

As we head into December, I’ve been reflecting on some of the lovely projects I’ve worked on throughout the year. And I couldn’t resist sharing The Old School with you.

There were so many exciting elements involved, my hope is this will offer you plenty of ideas and inspiration to take into your own home.

Breathing life back into an old school building

When I first visited this lovely property in Ladye Bay, I was immediately struck by its gorgeous location, period features and the view from its ceiling-height Victorian bay windows.

But the project was not without challenge.

Whenever you add a modern twist to a period property, it’s vital to create a cohesive style that works to blend old and new. Otherwise you could end up with two separate areas that don’t really connect.

My start point, as always, was an in depth colour consultation with the owners of the home. They told me their preferred style was, ‘pastel colours, pale greys and coastal vibes.’ And while I never want to push a client to do something they’re uncomfortable with, I do see it as my duty to present new colours and ideas they haven’t considered.

Importantly, this wasn’t about my own preferences, or current trends. It was about helping them understand which colours speak to them, and giving them confidence to explore outside their comfort zone.

The good news is, they absolutely LOVE the new scheme. In fact, they say their taste has changed so much during this journey that they feel much more connected to their new style and colour choices than their previous interiors.

The final design was one that celebrated the origins of the building, yet brought quiet luxury through the the use of quality materials sitting in harmony with period features. As well as the design of stunning bespoke elements such as the kitchen, two open plan staircases and a carefully thought-through lighting scheme.

All masterminded to make the most of the beautiful bay views and natural light.

Tips to obtain this look

Choose an eye-popping paint

By using a striking colour on the chimney breast, we created wow factor, celebrating the fireplace as a focal point rather than leaving it to blend into its surroundings. We chose Little Greene’s, Mischief, a hot pink with violet tones, complementing with a neutral blush pink to create a dramatic backdrop for the pitch black kitchen units.

Perfect paired with black and antiqued gold, marble will always look sophisticated and stylish. And it works to pull together those older and newer elements. Be careful not to choose a gold that’s too brassy or brash though. Antiqued gold looks fabulous against black or darker colours without creating too much ‘bling’.

Add interest with parquet flooring

Yes, it’s a classic for period homes, but it works brilliantly in a more modern setting too. And it’s a wonderful way to add some interest to the flooring, as well as practical for a living space that is in constant use by the entire family. I just love the elegant vibe it adds to a scheme, particularly when there’s a juxtaposition between old and new.

It’s my long-held belief that no one should ever have to choose style over practicality, it should be perfectly possible to have both. And that often means bespoke. A large open plan living space can be challenging when it comes to the lighting. So it’s important to start by exploring what you need from the space. By incorporating different types of wall and floor lights, under counter LEDs, as well as extra feature lights and lamps in key areas, you can create a layering effect that offers different options and, more importantly, different moods.

But here in Clevedon we’re incredibly fortunate to have a vibrant arts and crafts scene, with loads of local makers. In fact, one of my favourite ways to pass the time, is a relaxed wander down through the town, looking for beautiful items for my own or my clients’ homes.

Particularly at this time of year when the lights are twinkling and the Christmas stock has taken over the shelves.

I think it’s so important to shop local and to support smaller suppliers. It’s the only way to keep our high streets – and small business communities – alive. And when you start to look for it, you realise there’s an incredibly wealth of talent around. In fact, in independent stores you’ll find truly individual things that you just wouldn’t see in larger chains.

Especially when it comes to interesting Christmas decorations and unique gifts.

How to choose the perfect

wallcoverings for your home

A guide to making wallpaper, fabrics and murals work in your interiors

You may have heard. Wallpaper has been making a comeback over the last few years.

So when I went along to Focus/24 at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour in October, I was excited to see that there were plenty of exhibitors making the most of it. Both on their display stands and in their new collections. I featured some of them in my recent newsletter , so head over there if you fancy some inspiration.

I have a number of different go to wallpaper suppliers that I love, including Josephine Mumnsey_Zoffany and The Designer’s Guild_ for the sheer beauty and variety of their designs. And there’s nothing I love more than taking samples along to talk to clients about their options during our Inspire Session.

It’s safe to say I do love a bit of wallpaper and what it can bring to a room scheme.

Why use wallpaper instead

of paint?

Of course paint has its place, and there’s something very pleasing about cleanly painted walls as a blank canvas for a room. But wallpaper can also be a great option.

I’m a huge advocate for embracing a striking wallcovering, be it paper, silk or even a bespoke mural. Adding depth and layering to a design, providing interest, texture and somehow even warmth to a room.

Tips for wallpaper beginners

I have a couple of rules of thumb when it comes to choosing wallpaper or wallcoverings.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I don’t always follow these myself, because rules of design are there to be broken. But if you’re nervous about pairing wallpaper with other elements in the room, then keeping it simple and having a guide to follow is a great place to start.

Choose EITHER a plain wallpaper and pair it with patterned fabrics for your window dressings, seating and accessories, OR choose a patterned wallpaper from which you can then choose one or two favourite colours to use as the accent colours for your design.

Fancy one more easy cheat?

If you’re particularly nervous, but want a way to change up a room quickly, try dipping your toe and wallpapering the chimney breast, it’s a great way to add a pop of personality to your scheme. Or alternatively an interesting shaped wall, such as a sloping ceiling or double height space. It’s a slightly more contemporary take on the old feature wall idea which feels slightly dated these days.

Finding the perfect wallcovering

The most important thing when it comes to choosing your wallcovering, is that you select a design you love. It doesn’t really matter if it’s floral or abstract in its pattern, if it’s striped or relatively plain. You just have to love it.

Choosing a design with at least three colours from your favourite colour palette is a great basis for any design. Continue the colours throughout the room and because you really love the colour palette and patterns, there’s no reason you won’t love the finished design too.

If you prefer a plainer wallpaper then opting for one with texture is a nice addition – like these from the new MAGNITUDE collection at Casamance, for example. It will immediately add another dimension to your space. But don’t be surprised if you walk into your room to find your guests stroking your walls!

If you do choose a pattern, especially one with a large repeat, like some of these newer nature-inspired murals, note that it’s wise to consider scale and pattern repeat sizes. A large pattern on a small wall sometimes doesn’t translate so well. It’s worth being aware that a very dense pattern in a small room could make it feel a little like the walls are closing in.

Once you think you’ve found ‘the one’, request a sample. Put it up where you’re thinking of papering and live with it for a week or so to see how it works in different lights.

If you still love it and feel excited by it, then go for it. Remember you’re decorating your home for your own pleasure, not for anyone else.

Taking it a step further –

if you dare

If you really want to bring the drama there are a couple of ways you can really give your room the WOW factor.

Why not wallpaper the room in its entirety? With the right paper this can make a striking visual statement. Although, remember to check the scale and pattern repeat.

Or if that feels too much, then simply wallpapering the ceiling can add a modern twist to your design. And don’t forget you can always take colours from the wallpaper pattern to paint the skirting and architraves as an extra design feature.

Interior design should be about experimenting and having some fun, after all.

Have you ever been to one of the big design exhibitions?

The ones in London with hundreds of displays and exhibitors, workshops to attend and samples to snag?

Well, I visited two in two days last week - Decorex and Focus 24 . It’s lucky I love these things, but 15,000 steps in, I must say even I spent a little while ‘browsing’ some of the sofa collections!

TBH, if you’re into interiors, annual exhibitions are just the best way to see what’s coming along for the new season. And to discover new and exciting designers, as well as new collections from old favourites.

And this year was no exception. From A/W colour palettes, to cast concrete, I can’t wait to share it all with you below.

Design notes from Decorex

Let’s talk colour!

With sponsorship from YesColours , it was hardly surprising there were plenty of bold colours around. But as we move towards 2025, it was apparent that many of the designers are embracing what they’re calling ‘quiet luxury’. Deeper colour palettes and earthy tones, with fewer elements of ‘bling’ than we’ve seen in recent seasons.

I, for one, am loving the move towards these more sophisticated interiors, full of rich colours, sumptuous textures and luxury materials. It fits perfectly with the kinds of interiors I love to create.

I particularly enjoyed this stylish display from Graham & Greene , with its mauve hues and clever mix of pattern and texture! And even the paint company displays captured a new mood for 24/25. But don’t worry, there were still plenty of bold stripes and geometrics out there for the pattern lovers among you.

My 5 Finds for Friday

The ‘Spotted at Decorex’ edition

1. Kast

In their own words, Kast “focus relentlessly on one thing; making the most beautiful concrete basins anywhere in the world.” I’ve definitely earmarked these sinks for a future bathroom project - now to find a client who will let me include one of these in their designs!

2. The Soho Lighting Company

I love the idea of lighting that is reliably and responsibly made, so when I came across Soho’s pendants made from recycled plastic I was intrigued. Not only eco-friendly, but with soft creams and green fluted edges, what’s not to love?

3. A Rum Fellow

This distinctive duo brought along new rug collection, LITHIC, as well as their Tekton collection, launched earlier this year. Both inspired by nature, geology and timeless traditions, I loved the bold patterns, geometrics and earthy tones. And I love their ethos too.

4. Collett & Victor

First-timers at Decorex, I spotted Collett & Victor’s gorgeous upholstered seating from the other side of the room. Bespoke, made-to-measure using traditional Belgian techniques, I love the contemporary curves in their designs, not to mention the stunning fabrics and colours.

5. Off the Loom

It may be no surprise to hear that I love a stair runner, particularly a striped one. So I made a beeline for Off the Loom. And I wasn’t disappointed. Beautiful and super hard-wearing, these are made from 100% pure New Zealand 3-ply. So it’s a given they’ll stand up to busy family life.

Away from Decorex, I was blown away by the beautiful wallpapers, fabrics and murals at Focus 24 . So much so, there’s simply too much to chat about here.

How do you feel about autumn?

Personally, I love it.

After a busy summer, there’s just something so soothing about hunkering down at home and embracing the autumn vibes. The excuse to make everything warm and cosy. To turn on the lamps, light the candles and set a fire as the evenings draw in.

I always feel there’s a natural change of pace that happens around this time of year, a chance to breathe and take stock. Perhaps that’s why one of my favourite October pastimes is to create a cosy reading spot where I can curl up with a hot cup of tea, a soft blanket, a good book and a look out to the autumn changing colours.

Promising to add a touch of enchantment to your everyday, this collection of floral wallpapers and linens celebrates Mother Nature herself. And I can’t wait for the samples to arrive!

2. Amy Kent - New 'Albaicin Border' rugs

I can’t help feeling this new border collection by Any Kent , in collaboration with Rapture & Wright, will be flying out the door. Perfect if you’re a little nervous about introducing a wholly patterned rug, these border rugs introduce interest, without overwhelming other patterns in the room. And they can be made bespoke in any size and colour.

3. Casamance – New fabrics collection

French brand Casamance launched their new fabric and wall covering range for A/W24 last week, and it’s a ‘Wow’ from me. Taking inspiration from ‘the flower-filled valleys of the high Himalayan plateaus’, Casamance have given us the kinds of deep autumn hues and sumptuous textured fabrics that we’re craving. And they’ve introduced bold, modern geometrics into their new designs too. What’s not to love?

Embrace the season with autumn interiors

Make your house a haven this season with stylish autumn interiors tips from Kay at K Interiors.

Do you like autumn colours in interior design?

Did you know that we all tend to identify with one of the seasons when it comes to our interior design preferences?

It’s a theory put forward by colour psychologist Angela Wright in the late 70s / early 80s and it’s still used by interior designers today.

Put simply, each ‘season’ has a colour palette associated with it, and we tend to resonate with one of the seasons in particular. Identifying which one can make it easier to choose colours, patterns and even textures that will truly feel right. It’s a powerful way to work out where to start with your décor so that the end result is perfectly aligned with you.

I find it so interesting, and my clients find it incredibly helpful, that it’s actually a trusted starting point for my Inspire Sessions with new clients.

When we’re talking about an autumn interiors palette, we mean earthy tones. Colours like bronze, magenta, plum, deep teal and khaki green. They tend to be deeper, darker colours, slightly muted perhaps, but rich in tone.

And in interiors, autumn is not just about colour, a mixture of textures takes centre stage. Think exposed wood or stone, sumptuous velvets and fluffy throws. Autumn schemes tend to include strong patterns, statement wallpapers and heavy window dressings to repel the dark evenings. We create layers of interest with soft blankets, rugs, bold wall art and accessories.

In an autumn scheme there’s a lot going on. It’s a season of warmth; a season of more rather than less. But done right, the effect is beautiful.

Are you drawn to these autumn vibes?

What if you just want to add a little hint of autumn around the place?

Perhaps you’re looking around your home, thinking you tend to prefer things lighter, brighter or more neutral, not at all like the colour scheme on the autumn board above?

Don’t worry! That’s OK! Maybe you’re more of a ‘summer’ or ‘spring’ kind of person.

The good news is, it’s possible to make a few easy changes to your home if you do fancy embracing just a little slice of autumn.

I suggest you start by changing up some of the smaller elements in the room, to make it feel warmer and cosier in the darker months. Simply adding a few more lamps to use in favour of stark overhead lights will have a dramatic effect on the feel of your room. Or lighting scented candles and displaying gourds or small autumn-themed items.

If you’re feeling brave and want to take it a step further, though, why not make a few temporary colour changes too? This can be a really fun way to refresh your room. Then as we head into spring, you can delight in bringing back those lighter, brighter colours to lift the mood.

My advice is to start is by deepening the hues of your existing colour palette slightly. Look at the accent colours in your room and choose one or two to play with. Put away your sage green accessories, for example, and opt for a darker green, or change up your spring-like dusky grey-blue for a deeper French blue.

You should be able to find colours that still tie in with the main elements of your room – the furniture and wall coverings, but add the extra warmth you want for the coming months.

Hi home lovers,

A fortnight ago I told you all about my holidays and how they got my creative juices flowing. In fact, I was so inspired that I decided to give my own sitting room a little refresh.

Nothing huge, just the kind of simple (but oh, so effective!) changes that I often suggest as part of my Home Styling with K service. I replaced lampshades and cushions, painted the fireplace surround as well as the mirror. I then headed to the local Clevedon Art Fair to find a piece of art that would bring the room to life.

Just these few things can honestly make a world of difference. It doesn’t have to be rocket science.

Another week another art fair...

After my success at Clevedon’s little art fair, I couldn’t wait to head to the much larger annual art fair in Bath last weekend.

Taking place in the lovely Bath Pavilion, Bath Art Fair showcases contemporary art work, everything from acrylics to etching, textiles, ceramics and glass from independent artists from all over the country.

I spent a very pleasant hour and a half wandering around the stands, chatting to the artists. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with absolutely no pressure to buy. They were simply happy to talk about their inspiration and share their processes.

Colourful wall art

Whenever I visit these exhibitions I’m amazed by how much creative talent we have in this country and the passion they show for their art. I talked to one lovely artist about his amazing story (more of that below) and admired the intricate textile art, and just how long it must take to create.

And of course, you know me – I loved the fact there was plenty of bright colours and bold florals throughout.

Art with a story

One of my favourite exhibitors – not least because he was just really lovely to chat to, was Richard from the Point Paper Art Co .

Originally weavers, Richard’s family owned factories in Bradford throughout the 20th Century, working with fabric designers such as Jane Churchill and Designers Guild.

He has now brought together an extensive archive of designs from across Europe and uses them to create beautiful works of art with a very distinct heritage. I especially love that if you look closely you can still see the numbers in the margins.

It doesn’t have to be a piece for the wall

One thing I love about art fairs is you’re almost certain to come across things you hadn’t previously been looking for. And for me, this time, that was the glass art. What a fantastic collection of British and American artists so many interesting techniques!

I’m still considering buying one of their glass bowls with silver leaf and a stunning cut pattern to allow the light through.

And yes, I did see a few pieces with some clients in mind so watch this space.

My top 5 tips

Research before you go

Track down the art fair’s website or email the organiser to find out which galleries and artists will be exhibiting. Narrow it down to four or five you’re particularly interested in and then make it a priority to visit those. Of course if there is time you can wander around some more.

2. Measure your space

If you have a specific space you’re looking to fill, write down the measurements, sketch out the furniture layout and take some photos. That way you can check that anything you like will definitely fit the space. And you can try to imagine how it might look.

3. Take pictures of possible pieces

You may need to ask the artist’s permission, but by taking a photo of the piece you’re considering you can go home and hold it up against the wall to see whether you think it might work. Don’t forget to take down the artist’s information so you can get back in touch.

4. Don’t be surprised if paintings look a little different to online

If you spot paintings online that would be in the exhibition, don’t be surprised if they look a little different in real life. Often colours, textures and even the style can feel different in different lighting.

5. You don’t have to decide immediately

Take a day or two to consider your options. And if you think you’d like to take another look, give the artist a call. Don’t forget, it might be possible to opt for a different frame or even to ask about similar works that might work better in your space.

And a bonus tip

Don’t overlook other types of art, just because you think you want a painting. Sculptures, pottery or other mixed materials pieces, can bring an exciting and different dimension into your home.

Art fairs are a great way to see things you may not have thought of before.

With this package, you’ll get our full attention and design input, including a session with a specialist lighting designer, a session to shop for interiors either online or in-person, bespoke soft furniture design and bespoke fitted furniture design. Even if the weather hasn’t quite got the memo, we believe summer is just around the corner and what a glorious interior season it is!

The Summer Colour Palette

The summer interior season is tranquil and classical, full of soft muted colours and feminine floral patterns. Beautiful blush pinks, sage greens, lilac, airforce blue, ochre and pale greys feature here, and make for a relaxing range of colours when placed alongside neutral, natural materials such as rattan, wood and sisal. Think of the beautiful English countryside all wrapped up in one room.

There’s no doubt that kitchens are one of the hardest working rooms in any home - a space where we entertain, share family time, work, cook and generally live day to day.

Spring is springing!

This is one of my favourite times of the year. As the days get longer, the air warmer and the spring flowers pop up their colourful heads, I start to feel naturally reinvigorated and energised. It’s a time for new beginnings and a great time to change up your interior styling .

Seasonal home refresh

There are so many ways to reflect the change of season in your home and spring offers a vibrant palette of colourful hues. A simple vase of spring flowers (or two or three) can brighten your space and add a fresh spring element to your interior, while swapping out those cosy winter throws and cushions for items in uplifting spring colours and floral patterns can also create a lighter

look and feel.

Spring entertaining

Easter may be the first time you have opened your home to guests since Christmas. If so, did you go all out with Easter themed decorations, or did you keep things a little more subtle and understated?

I love to take my time dressing the table for special occasions and creating a dining experience for guests. I like to start with a patterned table runner or cloth as a base layer, then add a sprinkling of placemats and coasters, beautiful dinner and serve ware, sparkling cutlery and colourful glasses, all topped off with a gorgeous spring-inspired centrepiece.

Styling Tip - Don’t be afraid to mix your colours and patterns. Choosing a patterned runner or cloth incorporating at least three colours, to mix and match with the rest of your elements, will help to pull your table scheme together.

The result will be a fabulous table scape full of pizazz, around which to seat friends and family and enjoy good food and great company!

What’s new for Interiors in 2024…

We are fresh back from London Design Week at the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre – five days of interiors-related product launches,

talks and workshops showcasing the best and brightest world-class interiors talent. So much inspiration!

Our design senses were on serious overload…

Colour, colour, colour

Interestingly this year, more than in previous years, it was a joy to see so much colour and pattern on display. After several years of neutral colour trends, we can definitely confirm that we are now heading towards a joyful colour renaissance in the interior design world. New collections included a plethora of uplifting pattern, texture and colour, including a nod to the seventies in metallic textures, geometric shapes and other bold prints

Design Collaborations

Colour and colour-focussed collaborations seem to be on trend too. To mention a few: designer Kit Kemp delivered a wonderful insight into how her vibrant new collection for GP&J Baker came into being; rug company Bombay Sprout has teemed up with designer Laura Stephens to produce some gorgeous and unusual patterned rugs in an array of colours and made from recycled plastic bottles; and, of course, we were able to leaf through all the fabulous fabrics and wallpapers launched recently by Harlequin in collaboration with Sophie Robinson.

One of the many showrooms that caught our eye was the amazing Mind The Gap, designers and suppliers of super colourful, patterned wallpapers and fabrics. They’d even upholstered a Vespa Scooter in clashing patterns and colours to vamp up their window display – seriously cool!

A beautiful trim will add to your interior scheme the finer details that contribute to a professional, layered design, adding interest as well as a little extra personality. If you need convincing on these, look no further than the signature trims from Schumacher, which include trims in every colour, hue and design you could possibly imagine.

Design Avenue was full of colourful displays created by up and coming designers. Like the colour-Magpies we are, we spotted immediately the incredible pop-up by Clock House Furniture, where key pieces were upholstered in deep and intense pinks, yellows and oranges supplied by Christopher Farr fabrics and cleverly teamed with colourful wooden shapes.

Conclusion

Dopamine décor has arrived!

Why is colour important in our homes?

In the UK, we spend a lot of time in our homes and the colours we surround ourselves with can have a huge impact on our general mindset and mood. Use colours, patterns and textures you love and feel the positivity and comfort they provide as you go about day-to day tasks in your home.

Always think first about how you want to feel in your space before deciding which colours to use.

We love colourful art!

Art can elevate your interior scheme, inject personality and bring together all the decorative elements of your space, creating a home you will love to be in. Artwork should never be an afterthought. Used well, art is one of the most transformative design tools to add to your interior style and can elevate any room. Trying to source art that really inspires you and fits with an existing home interior colour palette and style can be tricky, and you might end up making a costly mistake or compromising in a way you’d rather avoid.

Spring into Style

Spring is on its way! As the days get longer and the spring flowers start to pop up their colourful heads, our thoughts at K Interiors are turning towards the joyous spring colour palette.

Spring colours are reflective of the season’s natural palette: fresh, playful, vibrant, uplifting, energising and clean. Think warm, bright shades, such as sunshine yellow, fresh greens, satsuma orange and fuchsia, mirroring the shades of spring tulips.

Change and optimism

Spring is all about change and optimism - the perfect opportunity to refresh your home interiors by introducing a splash of colour and pattern. To create a home you love to live in, it’s important to understand which colours bring you joy, but remember you don’t need to go all out, as even small changes will have an impact on your interior.d est laborum.

Styling with K

Imagine styling your home is like baking a cake, you’ve used top quality ingredients in your recipe:

Your cake is going to taste delicious, but there is something missing and you can’t quite put your finger on what it is!

Accessories and styling are like the icing on the cake, they are the finishing details that perfectly showcase your home. Whether your style is luxury glamour, quirky unique or eclectic and colourful, here are my top five accessories to create a stunning interior.

Suggestions from kay

1 - A Beautiful Lamp

Every room needs a beautiful lamp, either floor or table, but incorporating both will add balance. Think patterned shades and textural bases of metallics and colourful glass.

Tip - Go large and be bold with your patterns and colours.

2 - Sumptuous Cushions

If you’re thinking you need three or four cushions, believe me, five or six will be even better! The more sizes, shapes, textures and patterns the better your scheme will be.

Tip - Use the spectrum of your colour palette as a colour guide.

3 - Artwork

Artwork is like the cherry on the cake, the perfect finishing touch!

The best advice I can give you here is to buy something you truly love, and if you’re still unsure, remember art is personal, but it can be curated for you.

Tip - If in doubt seek help, as there is a fine line between fabulous and mehhh!

4 - Mirrors

A gorgeous mirror is a must in any interior scheme, whether oversized for glamour or petite for the perfect vignette, think outside the box using interesting textures and shapes.

Tip - I like to use the extremes of oversized and petite. Note- the unexpected is always a nice touch.

5 - Flower vase

Was there ever a room that didn’t instantly look better with flowers?

Think structural bold blooms and colourful glass vases in all your favourite hues. The beauty here is you can change your flowers as often as your mood desires. Yellows and pinks on a Monday, to cheer you up and deep reds for that Friday feeling.

Tip -One is lovely, but three, four or five is fabulous!

Extras

Books and plants are like a side serving of cream, totally delicious!

I recommend a liberal scattering throughout your home.

Tip - If you're not green-fingered, don’t worry there are many great faux options

Spending time at home over the festive period has found me thinking about all the home improvements I’d really like to make this year. Have you been doing the same? If so, now could be the perfect time to explore new paint colours and how to use them in your home.

You don’t have to go for all-out maximalism – clashing colours and patterns on every available surface are not for everyone. There are many ways of using colour to introduce interest to your interiors scheme, and one of the most current on-trend techniques is colour drenching.

There are many ways of using colour to introduce interest to your interiors scheme, and one of the most current on-trend techniques is colour drenching.

Colour drenching simply means using one paint colour on all the interiors surfaces of a room. This can include walls, ceilings, skirtings, mouldings, doors, radiators, window frames and sills. It is a tonal décor option, where light and dark shades of the same colour can be used to great effect.

Areas and features of a room can be highlighted and differentiated, not only with tone, but also by using a variety of different paint finishes, textures or sheens. The technique can be used in any style and era of property and is particularly useful in spaces otherwise lacking architectural detail.

Paint is the quickest and most cost-effective interiors style solution. By colour drenching a smaller room in a deep or intense colour, it’s possible to make that space feel cosy and cocoon-like.

The possibilities are endless, but the most important thing is to choose a colour you really love, as you will be surrounded by it!

Are you a frustrated colour-lover?

The traditional autumnal colour palette brings to mind warm yellows and golds, rich oranges, deep berry reds, purples and pinks, and dark earthy hues of the natural world. These rich colours, when used in combination with greenery, wood, and other natural materials, such as cotton and jute, provide us with a connection to nature and remind us of the positivity and joy that connection can bring.

Colour psychology shows us that colour has mood transformative properties and different colours affect human behaviour and our emotional responses. The undertone of any given colour will influence our response to it, with cooler tones providing a calm and tranquil feel and warmer tones a cosy, enveloping atmosphere.

The autumnal personality is often described as strong, fiery and vibrant, but the colour palette can be interpreted in a number of ways to suit each individual taste. Pastel autumn tones will produce a softer, lighter feel, dark rich tones provide a deeper, almost cocoon-like autumnal environment, and jewel tones will bring vibrancy and opulence.

place in London in September 2023.

At K Interiors, we eagerly awaited the 2023 Decorex interior design exhibition, which took

place in London in September 2023.

After several years of neutral interior trends, reflecting the mood of

the country as we navigated our way through the pandemic and resultant economic crisis, we

were keen to establish whether the design fraternity would concur with our instinct that the

interiors world is finally preparing to emerge like a butterfly from the cocoon, shake

off the greys and beige and launch into a beautiful colour renaissance.

The show certainly did not disappoint in this respect. Our hearts were truly uplifted by the

array of colour, texture and pattern on display all around us, making it abundantly clear that

we are on the cusp of seeing a much-needed injection of optimism and personal joy into our residential interior design schemes.

Informative, Colour-Focused Talks

Even the guest speakers were evidence of this new trend for colour, with one panel including

the Queen of colourful interiors, Sophie Robinson, her co-host on the Great Indoors podcast,

Kate Watson-Smythe, and the doyenne of upcycling and chalk furniture paint, Annie Sloane.

Their talk focussed on how to embrace colour in your home interiors, and they each started

by sharing their first memories of colour. Interestingly, and somewhat surprisingly, Sophie’s

first memory was of something white!

Colourful Sets

Surrounding the exhibitors were bright and colourful sets provided by ‘Yes Colours’, a brand

associated with water-based, eco-friendly paints in a range of deeply pigmented colours, a

fabulous wall mounted felt colour wheel and a rainbow tunnel (both great for Instagram), and

colour trails designed by behavioural design consultant, Karen Haller.

New Paint Colour Launches and Colourful Homewares

New paint colours being launched by companies such as Little Greene and

Coat included deep earthy tones, such as terracotta, claret and burgundy. There were

colourful salt and pepper grinders and other home accessories from Addison Ross, delicately

toned and elegant chandeliers at Rothschild & Bickers, gorgeous bright lampshades and

muted pink contemporary glass pendant lights at Pooky Lighting, bold, quirky painted

ceramics from Kinkatou Studio, a new contemporary technicolour range of faux books from

Original Book Works. Even the cisterns displayed by Thomas Crapper had been given a

modern edge and were displayed in the brightest of hues. Literally everywhere we looked,

there was colour!

The Importance of Colour Psychology and Colour Consultancy in Interior Design

Karen Haller’s colour philosophy very much fits with the K Interiors brand ethos and design

process, as we believe that living in an environment where you are surrounded by

the colours and designs you love can improve well-being and make you feel more positive.

Our design process always begins with a colour consultancy

session, the purpose of which is for us to understand how our client responds to a range of

colour palettes, patterns and textures. Also central to the initial briefing is to establish how the

client wants to feel when they are in the room. This may appear to be an odd question but, to

make the design work, we need to know whether the client wants to feel energised, uplifted, relaxed,

comforted, calm or focussed when they are in the room, as this will influence the choice of colour palette.

Traditional colour psychology suggests that certain colours are good for different

environments and evoke a particular mood or feeling. For example, cool colours such as

blues and greens are thought to be calming and to aid concentration. Green is also considered

to be fresh and optimistic – the colour of spring and of nature. Reds, pinks, oranges and

yellows are energising, uplifting and stimulating, whilst warmer and deeper toned colours –

burgundy, browns and deep blues, for example, create a cosy, comfortable feel.

Not only the colour, but also the tone of the colour palette will affect a person’s response to

any room design scheme. Deeper, bolder tones can inspire confidence, while lighter hues are

often linked to tranquility and serenity.

In our experience, although the above is a general rule of thumb, each

individual client will react to colours and tones differently, and we find that, in general,

people are drawn to a particular seasonal palette, or a mix of two.

The Four Seasonal Palettes

There are four seasonal colour palettes for interiors. Spring colours tend to be fresh, playful,

bright, uplifting and clean. Think warm and bright shades such as sunshine yellow, fresh

greens, satsuma orange, fuchsia and other pinks and reds, duck egg blue, plus pastel colours

mirroring the lovely soft shades of spring tulips as they poke their heads through the soil for

the first time.

The summer palette is more muted than the spring palette, and includes cooler shades – soft

neutrals, such as lilac, dusky pinks, sage green, soft teal blues and pale yellows. It is

described as cool, tranquil, classic, traditional, and sometimes feminine.

Autumn personalities are drawn to the earthy, natural, rich and often fiery colours of that

season. These colours create a cosy atmosphere and allow us to feel warmth and

comfort. This palette includes deep yellow and oranges, browns, claret reds, terracotta and

deeper greens.

The winter palette tends to be more minimalist than the other three seasons. This palette is somewhat

bold and dramatic, with striking contrasts. Primary colours, along with cold tones, such as icy

blues and greys feature here, with elements of deep blues, red and black.

Once we have identified what season or seasons our client’s personality falls into, we are able to create an

interior design scheme that supports their preferences, with the intention of the home around them

reflecting their inner personality and bringing them joy for many years to come.

Sustainability

Designing for longevity also means our designs are more sustainable and do not need to be

altered to reflect the latest fads and trends of the design world. Our philosophy is that, although in time the client might

wish to make superficial changes to refresh the look of a room by changing up smaller items,

such as soft furnishings, possibly artwork or a floor covering, all the original key elements will stand the test of time.

As for Decorex, both attendees and exhibitors genuinely seemed more upbeat than in

previous years, with lots of laughter and smiling faces everywhere we looked. Given that our

world revolves around colour, we can’t help but put down to the riot of colour on display.
